Oronomy
Digital work
Handwriting is fascinating because it is a unique mark, a blueprint of our brains. In an arc of work using the artist's own handwriting, Oronomy is the first piece to trace someone else's written words for use as brush strokes across a canvas. Sourced via a handwritten postcard from a friend, "the mountains have names like Sleeping Lady + Dirty Face" spirals around the composition, creating its own texture of terrain. The varying line weights create a sense of depth and elevation, echoing the visual rhythm of topographic maps.
The title, Oronomy, refers to the obscure term describing the naming of mountains. The mountains mentioned in the postcard, Sleeping Lady and Dirty Face, stand in Washington state.
The piece was pen-plotted in white paint markers (using four different widths) on 10"×16" black museum board.
Oronomy was sold at auction as part of CancerDAO’s group show and fundraiser for St. Jude’s during Miami Art Basel 2024.
